Matt & Kimberly : A Love Story (Part 4)
- Elisa Cool
Now that Matt had found his perfect match, he set out to find her the perfect ring.
“I had to work over Thanksgiving. I knew there was no way to meet her and/or celebrate with my family and get back in time for work. Kimberly drove down and surprised me by cooking an entire Thanksgiving dinner just for us. She even cooked the turkey twice because the first bird didn’t work. She really wanted to make our first Thanksgiving special because it was our first Thanksgiving together. I knew then that I was going to propose.” - Matt Bordelon
Narrowing the List
Matt got the finished engagement ring the first week of January. But the journey to get the right ring took a little bit of time and effort.
He had no idea when it came to what Kimberly really wanted, but was gonna make damn sure he got it right. So he came up with a plan to find out.
Over the Christmas holiday, on the way to see the City Park lights in New Orleans, they stopped for dinner. Next to the restaurant was a jewelry store. Matt popped in to ask some questions about a stone that was missing from a piece of jewelry his mother owned. They paused by the engagement rings.
“I think we sort of looked one time. I tried things on. I remember saying I like the circle stone with the fancy sides. I knew what I wanted, but that’s the last time we talked about it. I didn’t think a proposal was going to happen ‘till a long ways out,” shares Kimberly.
Finding the One
Kimberly knew what she liked. She wanted a round stone in a square halo setting. Matt felt confident he could find the ring for her but when it came down to getting it right, he realized that the perfect ring for Kimberly couldn’t be bought online or off the display, it would take some customization to make things just right.
In Matt’s mind, there was only one place he trusted to do just that. According to him, “I’d been best friends with Hunter Patton for a long time. I knew that one of the great things about Hunter is that he always pulls through. I had to get this perfect and I knew Hunter would do everything it took to get it right.”
Many guys are a bit nervous when walking into a jewelry store with a mind to buy a ring, not Matt.
“Honestly, I was excited walking into KP’s. I make highly detailed, executive decisions at my job all the time. When I walked into KP’s I had a plan.”
Romancing the Stone
And he wasn’t kidding, Matt had 7 diamonds selected and examined each one with a microscope. He requested two styles of ring because he wanted to incorporate details of each and combine their styles into one. One was bold and beautiful. The other was more simple and understated.
“Kimberly is dainty and petite, it had to be what she wanted and match her hand. I involved her mother and sister in the final decision and made a total of four trips averaging six hours a visit to get it right. It had to be perfect. For everything she does to put up with me, this ring had to be damn good.”
Happily Ever After
When Matt proposed and Kimberly saw the ring she was in shock and disbelief. She couldn’t believe that Matt was proposing. But, where the ring was concerned, she couldn’t wait to show it off.
“It was so beautiful! The fact that he made it for me, and spent so much time thinking about it, makes me love it.”
But how did Matt propose? Why was Kimberly so surprised? Tune into our fifth and final chapter of Matt & Kimberly A Love Story next week.
